Hotel ZaZa Houston Museum District

Of course in Texas, you expect everything to be a little bigger, a little larger than life, and Hotel ZaZa Museum District lives up to those grand expectations, including their vehicles which are mounted with long horns. Situated in the heart of the cultural Museum District,  Hotel ZaZa has a serious personality and has become my Houston home away from home.

Hotel ZaZa is a sophisticated, yet quirky, place that won’t be confused for a business chain anytime soon. The decor is sexy, but smart and surprising while the scent lingering through the hotel is aristocratic and leathery reminding me of my favorite Le Labo fragrances. Throughout the hotel, ZaZa showcases one-of-a-kind art pieces from creators in Texas and beyond, selected to create a memorable environment that promotes passion and creativity.

Whether you find yourself in Houston for business or pleasure, the trendy yet comfortable guest rooms and suites, including Pool Villas, Concept Suites and The Magnificent Seven all emphasize ZaZa’s creative, quirky character. The standard rooms are far from ordinary, but nothing compared to the Magnificent Seven, which are eccentric luxury suites featuring different themes and amenities like two-person tubs, chandeliers, marble fireplaces, mirrored walls, and swanky decor worthy of rock stars.

While a Balcony King is more than adequate for my stays at ZaZa, my personal preference is the Pool Villa, which is more than 300 square feet and either overlooks the pool with a balcony or opens directly out to the pool. The Pool Villas come with either a king or queen bed and have huge marble bathrooms with both a shower and a tub.

Just out the door from the Pool Villa, the ZaZa pool, true to the reputation of the hotel, is the place to see and be seen in Houston and offers an extensive poolside menu with adult popsicles, drinks by the pitcher, and specialty cocktails.  The “pool bites” menu features an exquisite selection of tasty items including crispy jalapeño calamari and sesame-crusted ahi tuna. Be sure and reserve your pool lounger in advance during the late spring and summer, so that you don’t miss out on the luxurious poolside atmosphere. The in-house-restaurant, Monarch, draws a mix of locals and hotel guests who can be found dining on the terrace year-round.

ZaZa is a perfect base for exploring the Museum District which is comprised of 19 museums located within a 1.5-mile radius of the Mecom Fountain in Hermann Park.  If you are a runner or walker, ZaZa offers direct access to numerous paths shaded by historic live oaks around Hermann Park. For a longer run, you can connect to the Rice University loop on the west side of Hermann Park. The trails are officially open at 6am and street lamps illuminate the path for those who want to get an early start.
